Unique pet shop in Cornwall that’s actually a bar for dogs
It’s hound heaven, perfect for pooches, a doggy delight, bitchin’ – you get the picture. But The Doghouse really is something special for the little (or large) four-legged friend in your life.
There’s nowhere quite like it in Cornwall and I dare say the rest of the country.
The Doghouse is a pet shop in Polperro but it’s so much more than that. What other shop for dogs has not one but two bars stocked with the likes of Bottom Sniffer ‘beer’, a ball pool, McDoggo’s drive-thru, Starbarks coffee and even an art gallery catering for doggievision (yellow and blue are the best colours for dogs to see)?

Dogs go crazy for the place, aided and abetted by a daily scent which is fanned around the shop, which is compact for a corgi and bijou enough for a bichon frise. Some days it can be the allure of bacon, others it can be eau de Cornish pasty, sausage or cheese.
The intriguing shop is the brainchild of Gareth Evans, who told CornwallLive: “I started as a dog photographer, but realised I couldn’t just have a shop just doing that, so we decided to do other things in here and it’s grown from there.
“We’ve been going for four years and word is really growing. We wanted it to be really different and interactive. It’s essentially a bar for dogs – during the summer we sell around 40 bottles of ‘beer’ a day. Dogs love it in here and because it’s a pretty small shop it can get absolutely manic!”

One of the real draws is the 6,000-ball pool and a competition to see how fast your dog can retrieve three tennis balls from the pit – top of the leader board for the past two years has been a Border Collie called Pippin who did it in an astonishing ten seconds.
The there’s the drive-thru where your pampered pooch can pose with its head through a car window while a fan blows their fur as if they’re the Marilyn Monroe of mutts.
And, of course, there’s the coffee bar area packed with coffee-orientated toys and treats. The two bars serve a range of pretend booze for Bozo – Bad Spaniels, Pawroni, Wagners, the puns flow.
You’ll also find a range of harnesses, leads and food. Basically everything a dogs needs, wants and didn’t realise it had to have is stocked in this amazing little shop on the street leading to Polperro’s harbour.
The Doghouse is so popular that Gareth is now planning another shop over the border in Devon. This is one Cornish idea that could go walkies far and wide.
