Weather may impact start of Manitoba’s fishing season, wildlife federation says – Winnipeg
Fishing year kicks off in Manitoba’s southern division Saturday, but as with a lot of outside things to do across the province, it’s becoming impacted by recent inclement weather.
In addition to prospective troubles accessing some fishing spots owing to high drinking water concentrations, Chase Dreilich of the Manitoba Wildlife Federation said the cooler temperatures could be problematic for some species of fish, like walleye.
“What that really impacts is the spawn time of the fish,” Dreilich instructed Global News.
“Typically (on) opening weekend, most of these fish are completed spawning, but with cooler temperatures, we’re predicting (spawning) is going to be pushed again a couple of weeks.”
“Really be mindful out there — if you’re out fishing and you catch spawning walleye, make certain you acquire treatment of it and you follow catch and release. We really do not want to be passing that stuff on for the potential.”
The high drinking water is also bringing robust currents and debris to nearby waterways.

Provincial all-natural means minister Scott Fielding announced the opening of Manitoba’s leisure angling season for the south this weekend, with the northwest and north-central areas next accommodate on May perhaps 21.
